How do i know if the company name i came up with is already in use?

So i came up with a randomish name for a website company i am going to setup soon, lets say, xxyyzz and i see that xxyyzz.co.uk is available but that xxyyzz.com has been reserved although no actually site yet. Should i do further checks to see if i can use the name i came up with for a company name, if i set up a site i may get an email asking me to change the name etc as someone else is also using it, a quick google search doesn't seem to show any company under this name but then the name i chose isn't what i would call totally original, i wouldn't be suprised if someone is already suing it.

Companies house have a register of all official companies.

you can search for your name and any other similar in the list.

http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/

However that does not mean that someone else is trading as that name, but the organised people will be. And if you register you name...

Many companies reserve site names, in the hope of selling them on.

or an individual does...but never gets around to using it.

- you can check the 'whois' register to see who it is registered to.

Your best bet is to check out my source which is free, you can find out if someone else is using the name you thought of and also give you a few tips on choosing a name if you haven't already done so.
Well presumably if you go to buy a domain name, if it is taken already you won't be able to use it so you will know the answer to your question.
Need to check with Companies House

As long as you don't use any of their copyrighted materials I would imaging anything you use will be fine..

If the website is available I think you'll be fine.
google it
